How Maximum Hit Points are Determined in D&D 5th Edition

In Dungeons & Dragons 5e, your character's hit points determine survivability in encounters. At 1st level, your character receives the maximum value of their class hit die plus their Constitution modifier.

Level 1 HP = Max Class Hit Die + Constitution Modifier

For subsequent levels, players either roll their class hit die or take the fixed average (rounded up): d12 = 7, d10 = 6, d8 = 5, d6 = 4, and add their Constitution modifier for each level gained.

Understanding Multiclassing & Hit Point Mechanics

When multiclassing in D&D 5e, you only receive maximum hit die hit points for your starting 1st-level class. Every subsequent class level you take — whether in your primary class or a new class — grants hit points using the standard level-up method (fixed or rolled average plus Constitution modifier).

Retroactive Constitution Adjustments

In 5th Edition rules, if your Constitution modifier increases (such as through an Ability Score Improvement at level 4 or 8), your maximum hit points increase retroactively for every level you have already gained. For instance, increasing Constitution from 14 (+2) to 16 (+3) at level 8 grants +8 additional maximum HP immediately.

Feats and Racial Traits Stack Compounding HP

The Tough feat adds +2 HP per level retroactively and for every subsequent level gained. The Hill Dwarf trait grants +1 HP per level, and the Sorcerer's Draconic Resilience grants +1 HP per Sorcerer level. All three bonuses stack cumulatively with class hit dice and Constitution modifiers.
